Ivy’s Autumn Poem

Ivy’s Autumn Poem

When the apples rain softly;

Sweet brown teeth from the gum–

And the amber winds draw close,

Whispering their dark moon hum–

My heartbeat grows icy, knowing

The Autumn dance has begun.

The black cows low deeply,

And the straw is star yellow.

Our mild sun, a traitor–

Painting mirages to mellow

The creaking of the spiders,

Crafting Winter’s gallows.

My mind is full of Autumn thoughts,

Like leaves and pumpkin patches.

See? The decay is all so tender,

It’s easy to get distracted.

And not to smell the rot beneath–

Cool breath of death enacted.

We do away with bright red smiles

For something sweet but fickle.

The days unshackle from their length–

They’re late to wake, knees brittle.

But perhaps this rest is just the thing

To halt the clocks a little…

See, an Autumn calf is a trying task,

Yet in Spring fields, she’s running.

And though I weep at falling leaves,

Earthy browns are quite becoming.

And faintly there is still the promise

Of Summer’s playful drumming.

So when grey days blot out the blue,

And seem to ache on forever–

I’ll breathe in deep the dark wet bark

And the crisp air of this weather.

Wish simply for a pair of hands

To hold some warmth together.

Remembering, our darling Autumn

Brings sleep, to hail new treasure.
