MOOD 1

Welcome to THE MOOD!!! This is a series I am introducing into the Ivy On Planet Earth blogosphere to replace what used to be my inspo page.

Whilst I LOVED my inspo page (I’m pretty sure it was actually one of the first pages that I started making when I began crafting this website), I felt that it should be a space that is ever evolving; updating and changing as I am inspired by new concepts, people, works and things. Thus, it has merged with the blog portion of my site so that I can post as inspiration comes and keep things fresh. Logging my inspiration in a series of posts also means that there will exist a kind of archive that can be returned to of all of my previous sources of inspiration, which I think is pretty cool :P

SO! THE MOOD! The moodBOARD! But what exactly is it that is grabbing my attention and circling my mind of recent? What has been inspiring me? Well…

Exploring Melbourne’s cafés

When am I not in search of a cool new café to try out? I actually can’t believe there was a point in my life where I genuinely believed Melbourne didn’t have any good cafés. HELLO? That’s literally what we’re known for! Anyway, here’s a pic from the very cozy Tin Pot Café. I definitely rate it. The atmosphere and decor inside were very lovely. The space was a little loud and I was placed on a large communal table, but to my surprise I found that I actually quite enjoyed this! I tapped away at my keyboard while across from me an older couple enjoyed a nice breakfast. Just the proximity created a sense of community which I loved. There was also an armchair spot facing the window – perfect for people watching. I’ll have to come back at a later date with a book.

Wearing heels casually

I truly need to start watching Sex and the City because on all of my socials I’m constantly being fed clips from the show and the girls’ outfits are everything! Those clips definitely inspired this high heel renaissance that I’m on. I’ve been loving incorporating a heel into more of my daytime looks. It’s just so fun and chic and I love the drama of click clacking as I walk about the city. Obviously it’s not the most practical thing in the world, and I have developed a number of blisters in the process. But for me this feels soooo 23! I just love it!

Not depriving myself of cool outfits

Bouncing off of my increased consideration of everyday high heel incorporation, the outfits that I have been coming up with to match these chic, dramatic shoes have naturally been a little more, you could say, elevated. But I’m not a 1960s socialite with a calendar full of parties to attend, so wherever shall I wear these glammed-up outfits? I’ve decided that it doesn’t really matter. I can wear them anywhere! As long as I’m not underdressed, these slightly extra outfits I’ve been concocting are appropriate for any occasion. Now obviously I’m not going to a funeral or my cousin’s 13th birthday party in a pink ball gown and Louboutins, but if I feel like popping down to a café in a fur coat because I’ve thought of a really fun and cute outfit that calls for it? Then so be it! I’ve also decided that no outfit can be “wasted” on a small event or menial task because every outfit can be repeated and worn again! This mindset shift has been very freeing and has inspired me to try out some really epic outfits (like the one above, if I do say so myself :P), even if I don’t really have anywhere important to be.

‘Hear the Wind Sing’ by Haruki Murakami

For atmospheric writing, Murakami is my favourite (although naturally I disapprove of the way he objectifies his female characters) and this is the first book he ever published. I loved it. It was such a slice of life. It felt like we were thrown into the deep end of this character and then slowly a picture was painted of him. As always, the magic of Murakami’s writing style made the mundane seem special even at times sacred. The quiet moments felt rarefied. Murakami manages to tease out the small details of life in an uncomplicated and matter of fact way to show their true significance. I will always admire how he makes the boring parts of life – meaningless conversations, menial tasks – interesting to read about. His writing style is so concise. It’s magic.

After

After are a trip pop duo consisting of Graham Epstein and Justine Dorsey. The pair make music that to me harkens back to the early 2000s. Specifically, I’m envisioning their music underscoring the various different montage moments often present in a romcom of that era. The wistful uncertain montage as the protagonist considers her rocky relationship; the pining yearning montage as she watches her lover from a coffee shop window; and the elated montage where they finally connect and live happily ever after. After has the perfect combination of piano, guitar, crashing drums and epic melodies all with an electronic influence to dress each of these occasions. I have specifically been loving their song ‘Deep Diving’. It is pure joy and transcendence. Like floating through a saturated sky in a technicolour bubble. It makes me feel alive! It makes me feel young and excited and fresh and new! Their second EP ‘After EP 2’ will be coming out on the 17th of October and I am so PUMPED to listen! I’m also just super obsessed with their cover art – very nostalgic to me, I love the Windows 7 aesthetics, the fonts and the collage-esque designs.

That brings the first instalment of THE MOOD to a close! This was so fun! If there’s anything weird or funky you’ve been obsessed with recently, feel free to comment it below :)
